Program Overview

Ready to turn your education into real-world experience? Join us at the North Eastern Strategic Alliance (NESA) and take the first step toward a career that makes a real impact.

NESA is a regional economic development organization serving nine counties across Northeastern South Carolina. We work every day to attract new businesses, support existing industries, and create lasting opportunities for the communities we serve.

We are proud to offer students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in economic development through our registered apprenticeship program, certified by the U.S. Department of Labor. Our Economic Development Apprenticeship Program places students at the forefront of regional growth efforts, equipping them with the skills and insights needed to support local communities, attract new industries, and promote job creation. As an Economic Development Specialist, you’ll be part of a small, driven team where initiative is valued and real contributions are expected. If you’re ready to move beyond the classroom and gain hands-on experience in a professional setting, consider applying today.

Your Role at a Glance

As an Economic Development Specialist at NESA, you’ll take on meaningful responsibilities that mirror the work of full-time professionals in the field. Your role will involve collecting and analyzing data, responding to project inquiries, and supporting strategic efforts to attract and retain industry across the region. You'll help maintain key business intelligence, manage real estate listings, and participate in industry outreach and regional tours. From preparing RFP responses to attending networking events and client visits, every task is designed to build your understanding of economic development while directly contributing to the success of our communities.

This paid apprenticeship starts at $17 per hour, with the opportunity to earn up to $19 over the course of the program. It’s designed with students in mind; flexible scheduling allows you to prioritize your classes while gaining meaningful, hands-on experience in economic development. You won’t be doing filler tasks. From day one, you’ll take part in real projects that matter, developing skills that translate directly into future career opportunities.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive an official certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor, formally recognizing your achievement as an Economic Development Specialist.
